The emerald was brought to Europe during the 16th century, violently, when the Spanish conquested Latin America and took control of the mines, and shipped the precious stones by boatload. From this point in time, the emerald has been adored by royalty of many countries, and used to adorn intricate crowns and various pieces of extraordinary jewellery. Also celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, held this particular gemstone very dear.

The emerald is sorrounded by noumerous little tales and lores. One of them tells that placing the precious stone underneath the tongue, would provide you with the ability to foresee the future and that the emerald could as well protect against evil spells. The emerald is the green variety of the mineral, beryl, which derrives its green colour from chromium and sometimes vanadium during the creation of the stone. Just as the other beryl gemstones, emerald is categorized between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs' scale of hardness. Emeralds is mainly sourced in Columbia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Russia, Brazil, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Large and flawless emeralds are exceptionally rare, as the gemstone most often have numerous inclusions. As many inclusions can have an impact on the fragility of the gemstone, a new kind of cut was invented in order to protect the gemstone against bumps. This cut is known as the emerald cut and is also a preferred cut for many other gemstones.
